Abstract
This article will review the antitumor effects of interferon in experimental animals (more detailed reviews were published in 1972 and 1977) (Gresser, 1972; Gresser, 1977). I must state at the outset what I hope to review, and what I will intentionally omit. This article will not deal with the effects of interferon on the development of viral induced tumors (i.e. Rous virus induced sarcoma, Friend and Rauscher leukemias in mice etc.) since interferon may be acting in these systems by inhibiting viral multiplication rather than as an antitumour substance per se. I will assume that there are instances in which tumor growth is independent of any viral activity and that inhibition of tumor growth by interferon is mediated by mechanisms other than its antiviral activity. I will be concerned therefore with the inhibitory effects of interferon on the growth of transplantable tumors. I will discuss only work in which interferon was administered to experimental animals, and not discuss the effects of interferon inducers since these may exert multiple biologic effects which are not necessarily mediated by interferon (Gresser et al., 1978; Vignaux and Gresser, 1981).
