Interferon and Cancer

Abstract

The American Cancer Society began a review in 1978 of all data regarding the antimitotic effect of interferons, the effect of interferons on immuno-effector cells, the activity of interferons against animal tumors, and the results of preliminary clinical trials of interferons in the United States and Europe. At the conclusion of this review, a decision was made to initiate an interferon clinical trials program. Four tumor types were chosen for the initial clinical study: lymphomas, myeloma, melanoma and breast carcinoma.
