Abstract
The usefulness of inelastic electron tunneling as a vibrational spectroscopy is now widely recognized. The customary arguments in its favor as a probe of surface adsorbates include its high sensitivity, wide spectral range, and good resolution. Even a cursory inspection of the chapter titles in this volume will show the breadth of its potential applications. As an introduction to such studies it is instructive to consider the outcome of some basic experiments in which relatively simple organic molecules are examined. From the results much may be learned that has more general application. Along the way we shall find many helpful indicators to how the method might profitably be further extended.
