Abstract
This paper gives a comparison of acoustic tomograms based on the wave equations using the Born and Rytov approximations. The comparisons are based on the distortions in the reconstructions using these two methods. It is shown that when a large forward scattering component exists that tomograms based on Born’s approximation are greatly in error. Rytov’s method has a wider range of validity, in practice, but suffers from the problems associated with the determination of the phase of the scattered wave.
