Abstract

The primary purpose of this book is to honour Professor Noel Hynes on the occasion of his official retirement from university teaching. A “festschrift”, primarily on running water ecology, and produced by some of his past graduate students and postdoctoral fellows was felt to be a fitting tribute. All of us have benefited greatly from his enthusiasm, knowledge and council and we hope that he finds the contents of this volume an acceptable way of saying thank you not only from the contributors but from all his students.
