Abstract

Birefringence measurements in BaMnF4 show that the structural phase transition at Tc ̴ 250 K has a slight first-order character and exhibits some hysteresis. The exponent of the temperature dependence of the order parameter is βexp = 0.30 ± 0.02 in agreement with neutrons scattering results. The analysis of the magnetic contribution to the birefringence demonstrates that some magnetic short-range order subsists till Tc.
