Structural Aspects of Energy Transducing Membranes

  • Chapter
Book cover Developments in Biophysical Research

Abstract

The elucidation of membrane functions is close to the stage where the properties of a given system are correlated with and explained by the knowledge of its structure. This stage has been already reached for the function of some soluble proteins, e.g. haemoglobin. The functional properties of haemoglobin (sigmoidal shape of the O2-binding curve, Bohr effect, the effect of diphosphoglycerate etc.) have been correlated with the precise knowledge of the tridimensional structure of the haemoglobin molecule and of its conformational changes when the ligand (O2) and the allosteric effectors (H+, diphosphoglycerate etc.) are bound.
