Immunology of Surface Fungi Dermatophytes

Immunology of Human Infection

Part of the book series: Comprehensive Immunology ((COMIMUN,volume 8))

Abstract

The majority of cutaneous fungus infections in man are caused by a group of filamentous fungi known as dermatophytes. These fungi, species belonging to the genera Epidermophyton, Microsporum, and Trichophyton, usually infect only the nonliving superficial keratinized layers of skin, hair, and nails. Although they have occasionally been isolated from the bloodstream, they rarely have been reported to cause systemic disease.
