Abstract

This chapter will be devoted to a discussion of immunological mechanisms relevant to infection caused by the Enterobacteriaceae. There is considerable debate concerning the proper categorization of these enterobacteria.* However, the usual clinical microbiological classification indicates that the family Enterobacteriaceae is composed of aerobic (facultative anaerobic) gram-negative rods which can be placed in the following divisions or tribes (and genera): Escherichieae (Escherichia, Shigella), Edwardsielleae (Edwardsiella), Salmonellae (Salmonella, Arizona, Citrobacter), Klebsiellae (Klebsiella, Enterobacteria, Serratia), Proteeae (Proteus, Providentia), and Erwineae (Erwinia, Pectobacterium) (Ewing and Martin, 1974). The immune responses related to systemic (disseminated) and local (urinary tract and respiratory tract) extraintestinal infections due to Enterobacteriaceae will be discussed here. Enteric disease caused by certain pathogenic enterobacteria (such as Salmonella, Shigella, and Escherichia coli) will be covered in Chapter 11.
