Cross-Idiotypic Specificity Among Immunoglobulins in Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis and Multiple Sclerosis

Summary

The existence of cross-idiotypic determinants among human oligoclonal Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis (SSPE) immunoglobulins was shown by the use of monospecific rabbit anti-idiotypic antisera. Sharing of idiotypy was also shown to exist to a lesser extent with sera from patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), another disease of the central nervous system. No reaction was observed with sera from other neurological diseases. Appropriate controls excluded artefacts due to a prevalent subclass of immunoglobulins in SSPE or MS. Identity with SSPE cerebrospinal fluid immunoglobulins and SSPE serum proteins was also demonstrated by the anti-idiotypic antibodies.

Our results confirm previous reported patterns of cross-specificity observed for other groups of human monoclonal proteins such as the IgM cold agglutinins or anti-γ globulin (l) antibodies and support the hypothesis of a close involvement of the antigen combining site in the idiotypic specificity.
