Action of Dieldrin and Related Compounds on Synaptic Transmission

  • Chapter
Neurotoxicology of Insecticides and Pheromones

Abstract

The symptoms of poisoning by dieldrin (HEOD) and related bicyclodiene insecticides in vertebrates (Gowdey et al., 1952; 1954; Gowdey and Stavraky, 1955; Khairy, 1960; Natoff and Reiff, 1967; Revzin, 1968), and insects (Gianotti et. al., 1956; Yamasaki and Narahashi, 1958), and of lindane in insects (Yamasaki and Ishii, 1954; Narahashi, 1971) suggest a similar excitatory action somewhere in the central nervous system by all of these compounds.
