The Comparative Neurotoxicity of Formamidine Pesticides

  • Chapter
Neurotoxicology of Insecticides and Pheromones

Abstract

The formamidine pesticides continue to interest investigators because of their novel chemistry, pharmacology, and spectrum of activity. They have been used commercially to control certain Lepidoptera and Hemiptera species and acarines including mites and ticks. Formamidines are ineffective against many other arthropods including harmless or beneficial non-target species. The representative of the formamidines receiving the most attention is chlordimeform (N’ -(4-chloro-0-tolyl)-N, N-dimethylformamidine). Three reviews on the chemistry and biological actions of chlordimeform (CDM, Fig. 1) and related compounds have appeared (Hollingworth, 1976; Matsumura and Beeman, 1976; Beeman and Matsumura, 1978) revealing a broad range of biological effects for this group. This report will attempt to relate some of these pharmacological actions to toxicity of formamidines in vertebrates and invertebrates.
