Abstract
The principal reactions involved in the biosynthesis of glycosaminoglycans are now fairly well characterized. By use of various cell-free systems, the polymerization of sugar units has been shown to occur by stepwise transfer of appropriate monosaccharides from the corresponding UDP-sugar precursors to the nonreducing termini of nascent polysaccharide chains. Sulfation takes place along with, or after, polymerization and requires the presence of 3′-phos- phoadenosine-5′-phosphosulfate (PAPS). For recent reviews see Stoolmiller and Dorfman (23), Roden (18), and Phelps (16).
