Abstract
During the last four years there have appeared an everincreasing number of papers describing the isolation and elucidation of the structures of many sesquiterpenoids occurring in marine sponges. It now seems that these very primitive animals contain the greatest variety of sesquiterpenoids in the animal kingdom. Almost fifty new sesquiterpenoids from marine sponges have now been isolated and characterized. In this paper I will present a broad survey of these compounds, which can be subdivided into three main groups: (a) furan sesquiterpenes, (b) sesquiterpenoid hydroquinones, and (c) sesquiterpenoid isonitriles.
