A Comparison of the Effect of Lithium Aid Haloperidol on Human Peripheral β-Adrenergic Adenylate Cyclase

  • Chapter
The Impact of Biology on Modern Psychiatry

Abstract

Lithium (Li) is an effective therapy in the treatment and prevention of the manic phase of manic-depressive illness (1). Lithium influences a number of physiological systems including biogenic amines (2,3), membrane transport (4–6), amino acid metabolism (7,8) protein synthesis (9–11), endocrine secretion (12) and some kinds of behaviour (13–15). Although the involvement of Li in cellular processes appears to be ubiquitous, no specific mechanism has been identified for Li’s therapeutic efficacy in manic-depressive illness.
