Abstract

The use of lime on acid soils is a necessary part of farming programs on most humid-region soils. Liming became a general practice in this country around 1900. Twenty-three million tons of lime were applied in 1957. An estimated 80 million tons of liming materials are needed annually to maintain soil fertility and permit maximum crop yields.
