Results and Theory of Paramagnetic Resonance

  • Chapter
Spectroscopy at Radio and Microwave Frequencies

Abstract

In passing from the study of gaseous microwave spectroscopy to that of paramagnetic resonance, the consideration of individual molecules is changing to that of atoms, or ions, embedded in the crystal lattice, and hence subject to all the various solid-state forces and interactions. This means that the theoretical interpretation of the experimental results is no longer so simple, the pure rotational energy of a molecule now being replaced by the action of internal and external electric and magnetic fields which produce splitting of the energy levels. Conversely, however, it follows that paramagnetic resonance can be a very useful technique for the study of solid-state forces, and the results already obtained have provided an immense amount of new information for the magnetic theories of solids as well as detailed data on ionic and covalent binding and nuclear information from the hyperfine splittings.
