Abstract
Health services research is a field of study rather than a discipline. Investigators come from health sciences (biostatistics, epidemiology, medicine, and other health disciplines), management sciences (finance, management, marketing, organizational theory, and operations research), and the social sciences (anthropology, demography, economics, history, political science, psychology, and sociology). The mix of disciplines has shifted over time to meet changes in health policy, advances in research methods and technology, the availability of research funds, and the priorities of funding bodies.
