Abstract

The first bronchographies probably occurred in patients aspirating or choking on a barium meal administered for a radiographic examination of the gastrointestinal tract, or passing through an esophageotracheal fistula. Much experimental work was done, starting from 1917, on contrast media and techniques, leading to the discovery of Lipiodol by Sicard and Forestier in 1922. This started the “golden half-century” of bronchography as a diagnostic procedure in the hands of pulmonologists and radiologists, with the ensuing surge of publications in medical literature (1).
