The Diaphragm

Abstract

The diaphragm has two important functions: it provides most of the work of inspiration and it divides the thoracic and the abdominal cavities. Understanding these two functions of the diaphragm allows for a complete understanding of the normal and abnormal processes that involve the diaphragm and the spaces it divides. Most diaphragmatic abnormalities are asymptomatic and are usually detected on a chest radiograph obtained for other reasons. However, the radiographic abnormalities identified on the chest radiograph are often nonspecific and the chest radiograph only serves as a starting point for further evaluations. Diaphragmatic disorders are evaluated with fluoroscopy, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and nuclear medicine scintigraphy.
