Abstract
Suppurative diseases of the chest have been recognized as early as antiquity, when Hippocrates recognized for the first time empyema of the thorax and described its diagnosis and treatment. In the present chapter, the two entities, lung abscess and pleural empyema, will be discussed separately, and diagnostic differences and similarities will be emphasized.
