Abstract
Pulmonary cysts may be congenital or acquired, single or multiple. Acquired cysts are thin-walled cavities resulting from the residual space of a long abscess (mainly staphylococcal). Congenital or bronchogenic cysts are derived from a developmental defect in the bronchial terminations resulting in localized dilatations of the bronchial tree. In contrast to acquired cysts, congenital cysts are lined with bronchial epithelium; in most instances the diagnosis is based upon histology. The presentation and investigation of these conditions are summarized below.
