Abstract
The neuronal elements of the retina are shown in the diagram. Modified bipolar neurons, the rods and cones, constitute the light sensitive components. Their distribution throughout the retina varies with the region examined. The fovea central is contains cones only, which respond to daytime high intensity illumination, for sharp vision and color discrimination. Cones and some rods are seen in the surrounding region, the macula lutea.
