Abstract

Laparoscopy, although not a new procedure, did not gain momentum, especially in the United States, until the development of optics and fiberoptic light bundles in 1952 made it both practical and popular. Laparoscopy now accounts for the majority of all gynecologic operations and is second only to abortion in the United States in its frequency as a surgical procedure.
