Abstract
In Chapter I-6 we mentioned that the question of when it is possible to solve x2 ≡a (mod m) was one that involved a certain amount of nontrivial mathematics. In this chapter we describe a procedure for determining efficiently whether or not a is a square mod m. The main result, known as the law of quadratic reciprocity, was first proved by Gauss and is a cornerstone of number theory.
