Abstract

The moment of inertia and section modulus of a structural steel member can be increased by the use of cover plates. In new steel work, height restrictions may limit the use of deep sections, making a cover-plated shallow beam necessary. Occasionally, the availability of rolled sections suggests the economical use of cover plates. Cover plates can also be added to increase the flexural capacity of existing beams of renovated or modified structures. Plates, in many cases, can be attached to beam flanges and cut off where they are no longer necessary.
