Abstract

We will start this chapter with the consideration of a relatively simple problem in determining costs, and then consider what would happen if the problem were to be made more realistic. The results of this consideration will indicate many questions which must be answered, and will ultimately lead to the definition of one of the two basic concepts of the calculus.
