Trophic Structure of Raptor Communities: A Three-Continent Comparison and Synthesis

  • Chapter
Current Ornithology

Part of the book series: Current Ornithology ((CUOR,volume 10))

Abstract

Community ecology is a key to understanding function in nature, but a unified agreement about how communities are ordered has been elusive. Indeed, convictions about their organization range widely between the view that communities are random assemblages of organisms (Gleason, 1939; Beals, 1960) to the opinion that they are highly organized units arising out of species interactions (MacArthur, 1958). Others believe that autecological processes also play a large role in community structure (Wiens, 1983).
