Abstract
The present work is intended as both an introduction to and an update of the subject of electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide. By electrochemical reduction I mean processes in which electrically charged species take part; this type of processes includes photogenerated charge carriers, such as electron-hole pairs photogenerated in semiconductors or 19-electron reducing species.(1) It is an introduction in the sense that it tries to give a general idea of the problems associated with the process and indicates sources for further documentation. It is an update because many of the examples used were published after 1987. Material published prior to this year was summarized in excellent recent monographs on carbon dioxide utilization,(2) the catalytic activation of carbon dioxide in general,(3) or specifically the activation of carbon dioxide by metal complexes.(4)
