Development of the Pancreatic B-Cells: Growth Pattern and Functional Maturation

  • Chapter
Endocrine and Biochemical Development of the Fetus and Neonate

Part of the book series: Reproductive Biology ((RBIO))

Abstract

The pancreatic B-cell may be regarded as a biological sensor which plays a key role in controlling the disposal of glucose. It is conceivable that the ontogenic development of such a system is of decisive importance for its proper function in postnatal life. While both the growth and functional differentiation of the fetal B-cell have been the subject of numerous studies, there are still large gaps in our knowledge as to the molecular mechanism of these events. It is the purpose of this review to summarize recent observations on the growth, differentiation and functional maturation of the fetal B-cell.
