Abstract
An important type II iodothyronine 5’-deiodinase activity has been reported to be present in rat brown adipose tissue, whereas it is absent from white adipose tissue. The iodothyronine 5’-deiodinase activity is responsible for the T4 deiodination to T3 and the available data, based mainly in rodents studies, point to the existence of at least two different enzymatic forms. Type I enzyme is mainly present in liver and kidney, has Km values for T4 and rT3 in the micromolar range and is inhibited uncompetitively by propylthiouracil. Type II enzyme has been found in the brain, pituitary and brown fat, it has a Km for T4 and rT3 in the nanomolar range and it is not inhibited by propylthiouracil (1,2).
