Abstract
Just before birth, liver mitochondria are relatively undeveloped with respect to a capacity for aerobic ATP synthesis. They also lack the ability to perform certain reactions compartmentalized in the matrix that are an essential part of metabolic pathways such as gluconeogenesis, ureagenesis, and fatty acid oxidation. The postnatal development of these mitochondrial activities is a prerequisite for independent metabolism in the neonate. Morphologically, compared to postnatal mitochondria, prenatal mitochondria are: larger; more variable in shape; have fewer cristae; are fewer in number per cell; and have a higher equilibrium density. Shortly after birth the mitochondria begin to proliferate. Details of all these enzymatic, functional and morphological aspects of mitochondrial development in the perinatal period were reviewed recently (1). This paper will focus on some interesting regulatory events that occur immediately after birth.
