Abstract

Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in infants was first described in 1959 by Avery and Mead who showed it results from a deficiency of surfactant, a phospholipid-protein complex, in the lung. RDS, also called hyaline membrane disease, is most prevalent in premature infants. This lung abnormality has interested many scientists and clinicians and has led to a greater understanding of the biochemistry of the lung and to the elucidation of the components of lung surfactant. To understand the function of lung surfactant, it is appropriate to consider first the overall gross anatomy of the lung (Fig. 9–1).
