Abstract

Unlike osteoporosis, renal osteodystrophy offers the promise of recovery as a result of aggressive treatment. We studied long-term bone mineral density (BMD) changes in 364 end- stage renal disease (ESRD) patients in six U.S. dialysis centers. The BMD distribution among ESRD patients at onset is no different from that of the general public. But after a time on dialysis many patients lose BMD at a rate faster than normal. Yet catastrophic BMD loss rates have either been arrested or reversed in many renal patients, a phenomenon quite at variance with patients receiving treatment for osteoporosis.
