Abstract
All dialysis techniques are imperfect substitutes for normal kidneys. Yet the long-term success of dialysis in comparison to the prognosis of renal failure without this treatment is a tremendous technological success. Until the advent of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), that success was virtually exclusively attributed to hemodialysis. Despite considerable criticism, CAPD has grown remarkably in less than a decade, now accounting for about 20% of the dialysis population. Yet this treatment has numerous inadequacies, as discussed in the following sections.
