Abstract
Characteristic features of the apolipoprotein AI-Milano (apoAIM) high density lipoproteins (HDL) are: (i) their low plasma concentration; (ii) their particle size profile that consists primarily of two major peaks, one in the HDL3a size interval (8.8–8.2 nm) and the other in the HDL3b size interval (8.2–7.8 nm); and (iii) their unique protein moiety that includes the apoAIM variant, identified by an Arg 173 → Cys substitution (1,2). While the presence of a low plasma HDL concentration and a particle size distribution enriched in smaller particles is frequently observed in hypertriglyceridemic subjects (3,4), these features are observed in apoAIM-carriers even at normal triglyceride levels (Figure 1). Thus, additional factor(s) appear to be involved in determining the characteristics of the apoAIM-HDL particles. One factor may be an effect of the variant apoAIM on the structure, apolipoprotein composition and metabolism of the apoAIM-HDL.
