Abstract
In recent years the chemistry of oxygen binding transition metal complexes has attracted considerable attention1,2. Examples of these complexes range from naturally occurring compounds such as hemoglobin and complex synthetic models like iron porphyrins to very simple molecules such as cobalt pentaamine complexes3. In addition to their importance in fundamental chemistry these transition metal complexes are of great interest for oxygen separation processes and have been used in membrane systems4, pressure swing systems5 and electrochemical separation systems6–8.
