Abstract
The presence of chronic hypoxia in peripheral tissue in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the major factors leading to a poor prognosis (Kawakami et al., 1983) If hemoglobin-oxygen affinity can be reduced by pharmacological agents, oxygen delivery to the tissues should be improved in mild hypoxemia. We examined the effects of three agents on hemoglobin-oxygen affinity in vivo and in vitro. The first is pentoxifylline which is a xanthine derivative and has the effect of improving capillary circulation’ and increasing intracellular ATP (Ohshima and Sato, 1981; Stefanovich, 1975). The second was coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) which improves oxygen utilization in ischemic heart muscles (Mochizuki et al., 1980). The third was calcium hopantenate which increases glucose utilization in brain tissues (Tamura et al., 1986).
