New Approaches to the Design of Materials Via Preparative Inorganic Chemistry

  • Chapter
Design of New Materials

Abstract

“An important goal of materials research is the ability to design and synthesize, in high yield, new materials whose structure and properties can be predicted, varied and controlled.” This statement taken from “Trends and Opportunities in Materials Research,” a report (1) to the National Science Foundation by its Advisory Committee, is the challenge held out to the synthetic vhemist by the demands of materials technology. The report goes on to state that the goal can only be achieved when the structure and stability are well enough understood on an atomic and molecular scale to predict macroscopic properties. Frequently the processing following the synthesis determine the ultimate structure and properties of the end product. With this in mind, we have structured the symposium to primarily focus on innovative synthetic procedures, materials modification and processing, and structure-property relationships.
