Abstract
Dietary long chain saturated fatty acids promote arterial thrombosis in rats. Palm oil (PO), however, containing 50% saturated fatty acids (mainly palmitic acid), does not follow this general rule. As compared with a control diet containing 5 energy % (en%) sunflowerseed oil (SO), a diet containing 50 en% physically refined palm oil (PO-R) inhibits the thrombotic obstruction of a loop -shaped cannula, inserted into the lower aorta of male rats. Alkali-refined PO appeared somewhat more active than PO-R. Rabbits , fed a 32 en% PO-containing diet for more than 18 months, did not develope more atherosclerosis than animals fed diets containing various unsaturated oils (fish oil, linseed oil, olive oil, and sunflowerseed oil). These effects of PO are associated with alterations in the formation of pro- and antithrombotic prostanoids and in some functions of blood platelets. PO-feeding hardly affected blood lipid levels in rabbits.
