Abstract
I would like to welcome you on behalf of the Governor of the State of New York, Mario Cuomo, to what I hope will be an informative and evocative forum on a pressing public health issue. I have a certain degree of mixed feeling about welcoming you to a conference, the subject of which has been such an enormous problem to all of those who are here and certainly to those of us in New York State, especially those who represent some of the major urban areas where AIDS has been a continuing problem, I’m delighted that this conference has attracted individuals from a broad spectrum of the world community, because AIDS is not only a problem for this state or the nation, but rather for people everywhere on this planet.
