Abstract
The vertebrate central nervous system responds to alterations in its humoral milieu. This is not surprising considering its constant exposure to changing hormonal states which are continually generated by a complex endocrine system. One aspect of this responsiveness is the homeostatic control of hormone synthesis and release. Many hormones released into the circulation by the pituitary, and other endocrine tissues, enter the CNS and exert feedback control on hypothalamic neurons that project to the median eminence. However, the roles of hormones may be quite complex, and are not restricted to the regulation of their own release. Certain hormones, in particular steroids, participate in the development of many complex behaviors that require coordinated actions at many levels in the CNS (1). Moreover, the ability of many classes of steroids to alter gene expression, even in a mature differentiated nervous system, suggests that neuronal phenotypes are continually influenced by the humoral environment.
