Abstract

There are several ways of assessing the chemical bond strength of atoms in solids. One way is based on the concept of electronegativity, but this approach has been sharply criticized [1]. Another way is based on the effective charge of ions or atoms. Although the absolute values of the effective charge determined experimentally are somewhat different depending upon the methods used, the relative values in the ionicity series are quite useful to interpret various physical properties of solids.
