Hagfish Insulin: Evolution of Insulin

  • Chapter
Evolutionary Biology of Primitive Fishes

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSA,volume 103))

Abstract

Insulin plays a profound metabolic role in vertebrates and possibly also in many invertebrate species. Insulin regulates transport and metabolism of carbohydrates and amino acids, stimulates biosynthesis of lipids and proteins. Thus, insulin has major effects upon nutrition, both at the cellular level and at the level of integrating the anabolic needs of an organism. The evolution of the insulin molecule and its receptors-effectors is an interesting problem of potential relevance.
