Abstract

The contact system of coagulation is constituted by that group of plasma proteins and enzymes whose properties and activation are controlled by binding to negatively charged surfaces. Their interaction constitutes the preliminary part of the intrinsic pathway of coagulation but the involvement of these factors in activation of complement, Chemotaxis and generation of vascular active agents suggests a more complex physiological role than was once supposed (1). Because of the surface dependency and the nature of these reactions it might be expected that platelets would play some role. However, the evidence supporting such a role for platelets in the contact system is as yet circumstantial and derived from in vitro observation.
