Abstract
Colloidal and surface properties of powders control aqueous ceramic suspension properties such as agglomeration, viscosity, and ordering. The important particle-particle interactions are controlled by the charge and potential distributions in the ion cloud surrounding particles in suspension, the electrical double layer (EDL). These interactions arise, in turn, from acid-base reactions that occur on the powder surface as a function of pH and electrolyte concentration. Consequently, understanding these mechanisms is critical for controlling ceramic suspensions during processing of high quality pieces (Bleier, 1983).
