Clinical and Biological Aspects of Essential Thrombocythemia

  • Chapter
Advances in Hemostasis and Thrombosis

Abstract

Essential thrombocythemia (ET) is a clonal myeloproliferative disease that involves a multipotent stem cell common to the megakaryocyte, granulocytic, and erythrocytic lines (16). In ET the major abnormality is represented by the increase of the megakaryocyte number, volume, and mass (13,25,26,45). The resulting platelet production is usually 4–6 times more than the normal value, while the platelet survival is normal or slightly decreased (25,29,34,43,45).
