Abstract

The evaluation of the thrombotic risk can be done using a probabilistic approach. This is due to a new application of epidemiology: the field of perspective studies. The tools of this new application of the old discipline deal with the study of several parameters in a given population, and subsequently the application to individual patients of the statistical data obtained from the groups. In this context, the thrombotic risk factor is nothing more than a statistical predictor, that is, an attribute that occurs more frequently in persons with disease than in control people. The application of the epidemiological studies can be very useful, as only in a small number of situations the relationship between clinical and laboratory events on one hand and thrombosis on the other is fairly constant.
