Abstract
The aim of this lecture is to examine the development of our knowledge of hemostasis. A chronological table of the main dates of the history of coagulation and hemorrhagic diseases can be found in my 1950 treatise “Le Malattie Emorragiche.” A summary of the history of coagulation can be found in various publications: two chapters by Spaet and Ratnoff in Wintrobe’s “Blood Pure and Eloquent,” and in a report presented by De Nicola in 1978 at the International Congress of Bologna on thrombosis (regarding the years 1935 to 1965). A summary of the history of platelets can also be found in a 1981 publication presented at Bergamo in honor of Bizzozzero’s centenary. Therefore, a further analysis of the development of such knowledge is unnecessary.
