Abstract
Small-particle physics deals with objects which neither belong to atomic physics nor to condensed matter. Small particles, aggregates or clusters with size as a variable quantity occupy a domain of great complexity between atoms and crystals. The two words MIE SCATTERING and CATALYSIS might indicate that this domain is in existence (and of importance) since the start of the century. However, only in recent years have the various research activities on small systems emerged into what may be called a new discipline. A look at meetings in the present decade is sufficient to demonstrate this. The 1980 Lausanne conference on Small Particles and Inorganic Clusters /l/ has produced a broad spectrum of results and has stimulated further research and interdisciplinary interaction; a similar conference is awaiting us in 1984 in Berlin. Entre l’atome et le cristal: Les agregats was the theme of a school in 1981 /2/; a Nato school on the Impact of Cluster Physics in Material Science and Technology was held in 1982 /3/, and several workshops took place during the last three years.
